BTEC Higher Nationals in Performing Arts

Sysco’s BTEC Higher Nationals offering in Performing Arts will be via the Level 5 Higher National Diploma, through the Musical Theatre pathway. This route will be open to all students who have previously completed a Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Performing Arts.

The purpose of BTEC Higher Nationals in Performing Arts is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the Performing Arts and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them.

The BTEC Higher National qualifications in Performing Arts are aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning. Higher Nationals provide a wide-ranging study of the Performing Arts and are designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in Performing Arts. In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of the Performing Arts, Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Performing Arts give students experience of the breadth and depth of the Performing Arts that will prepare them for further study or training.

Students who complete the Level 5 Higher National Diploma will have developed a sound understanding of the principles in their field of study and will have learned to apply those principles more widely. They will have learned to evaluate the appropriateness of different approaches to solving problems. They will be able to perform effectively in their chosen field and will have the qualities necessary for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making.

Achieving 120 credits at Level 4 through the Higher National Certificate is a pre-requisite to be able to join the Level 5 Higher National Diploma. During the course of the HND, 120 credits at Level 5 will be studied, split across 7 Units. For the Musical Theatre pathway, 6 units will be at 15 credits each, alongside the double weighted mandatory Creative Research Project unit. The units studied on the Higher National Diploma will be as below;

  • Unit 32 – Creative Research Project (30 Credits)
  • Unit 33 – Working in the Performing Arts Industry (15 Credits)
  • Unit 39 – Dance for Musical Theatre (15 Credits)
  • Unit 43 – Singing 2 (15 Credits)
  • Unit 44 – Acting 2 (15 Credits)
  • Unit 36 – Contemporary Dance 2 (15 Credits)
  • Unit 50 – Performance Project (15 Credits)
