What is Foundation Learning?

Foundation Learning offers personalised learning combined with Vocational development, Functional Skills and Personal and Social Development .
This includes advice and guidance to help with their career choices from our dedicated team of staff Including:

  • Recruitment Officer
  • Keyworker
  • Tutors
  • Placement Officer

Who is it for?

At Sysco Foundation Learning provides flexible programmes for young people
aged 16 -18 year olds who have left school, learners who are 19 years of age are also eligible for foundation learning only if you were 18 years old as of 01/08/2011.

The programme is ideal if you are:

  • Not currently in education, employment or training
  • If you want to try work tasters in local companies to help choose a career

How long does it last?

Programmes are flexible in both content and duration to support each learners progress.
Qualifications you could gain?
Sysco aims to help young people achieve their career goals by offering a wide range of credit based qualifications across a variety of vocational areas. Equally important, learners will be offered a package of support with:

  • Employability Skills
  • Personal and Social Development Skills
  • Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT


During the programme you will also be able to attend personal development workshops, such as interview skills, health and well being, managing personal finances and working with other learners
All qualifications offered will be at either Entry Level 3 or Level 1, with some units available at Level 2.


How many days a week is it?

It is a full-time programme which is a minimum of 16 hours per week and a maximum of 30 hours.
This time includes three days spent at Sysco where you will work towards achieving a number of qualifications
and also the time you will attend your employment development placement.

Is there any funding or financial support?

You may be entitled to:

  • EMA/Bursary fund (if eligible)
  • Financial support with travel, additional funds are also available for travelling to placements
  • Cash Bonuses paid on achievement of qualifications and progression
  • Care to Learn: this is a childcare payment available to young parents. It provides financial support for teenage parents who want to continue or return to learning or training.
