SKILL BOOST - A SEAMLESS TRANSITION
With Skill Boost behind him, trainee welder Paul achieves his pipe dream
The world of welding became a passion for 19-year-old Paul Hird from Aintree when he achieved his Level 2 NVQ. Paul had set his sights on career with a company laying pipes in the North Sea, and was thrilled when he received a job offer.
However, Paul soon discovered he needed to obtain a coded certificate in ‘stovepipe’ welding before he could move into the job. He returned to his local Jobcentre in Aintree, who referred him on to Sysco as the regional Skill Boost training provider.
“Because Paul was relatively young and inexperienced, we decided to send him for an assessment at North West Welder Training in Eccles,” explains Sysco’s Employability Manager Mark Spanner.
“The feedback we had was that his welding skills would take some time to develop.
“But Paul’s attitude was always superb,” adds Mark. “He remained positive, and totally committed to welding as a career.”
Mark contacted a local employer, Denholm Rees O’Donnell, based near Paul’s home. They arranged for Paul to attend an interview and were so impressed with his enthusiasm, they decided they would offer him a job as an Apprentice – provided he achieved the coded welding certificate that he needed.
“We were able to organise a Work Trial for Paul,” says Mark. At the same time, North West Welder Training was also prepared to provide him with two days a week training in order to bring him up to the standard required.
Paul started full-time employment with Denholm Rees O’Donnell in early 2009, and by March was about to begin his Apprenticeship.
“We’re so pleased that we were able to steer Paul towards the work that was just right for him at that early stage in his career,” says Mark. “His commitment shone through from the start – he just needed more time to work on his skills.
“Now, he will be able to develop properly to get on in the career he so clearly loves.”
