STAGE STRUCK

e2e learner Joe Walsh performs in a play sponsored by Jimmy McGovern

Jimmy McGovern is one of the most respected writer/directors of our time and it is no small achievement to be given a part in a play sponsored by him. However, Sysco e2e student Joe Walsh has achieved this accolade aged only 16.
Joe appeared in ‘Da Boyz’ a hard-hitting 60-minute play about the effects of guns, knives and gangs as it toured youth clubs and local schools to raise awareness of the issues facing Liverpool’s youth.
Described by McGovern as “a crucially important play that deserves to be seen by everyone”, it explores the effects of gang culture on young people, their families and communities. In the aftermath of the Reese Jones case, it made for compelling and thought-provoking theatre, and attracted sponsorship from both writer McGovern and media mogul Phil Redmond.
Joe took the part of three characters – Carl the Goth, Stevo, a gang member, and Jamie Murphy, a rival gang member who gets shot.
“It was a great experience and it took my acting to the next level. I would do it all again tomorrow! I’ve also been inspired to write something of my own,” Joe says.

• From sports leadership to performing arts, construction to horticulture and music to IT, Sysco’s e2e learners get a taste of a whole range of skills and experiences that they can carry forward with them on the path to a new career.
